With more than a century of history, Berneck is a national reference in MDP, MDF, HDF panels and pine and teak sawn wood. The company from Paraná has a manufacturing park with high production capacity and state-of-the-art technology, offering products with international quality standards. The company supplies the furniture, civil construction, automotive, electronics, shipbuilding industries, among others, in Brazil and worldwide.

The company needed to improve control and security in access to its administrative and industrial network, meet the need for connectivity redundancy with remote units through link balancing and VPN communication; and facilitate access to suppliers from different locations that provided services using the virtual environment.

Solution

Given this scenario, Aker and Softwall developed a project to interconnect Berneck's industrial plants, implementing the Aker Firewall appliance with the subscription modules (IDS/IPS and Aker Web Content Analyzer) and the Aker Antivirus Module.

Aker Firewall was positioned in such a way as to segment the client's infrastructure into administrative networks and industrial networks. There was a division between departmental firewalls and firewall core, in this way it was possible to improve security and access control to several systems, preventing network operational problems or possible infestations of malware spread across different segments.

Well-defined rules were also created for each department's firewall, providing a complementary level of security both for Internet access, with content control and antivirus, and for remote access released to suppliers through Secure Roaming, with which the department manager can define what will be released, when and for how long the supplier will have access.

Aker Firewall also enabled centralized and simplified management of connectivity between remote units. This is because, with centralized management, the units gained ADSL Internet links to provide redundancy of Internet access and connectivity with the central unit, through balanced VPN accesses between the links.

Results of

The project brought to the company an automated and well-defined routine for remote access through Secure Roaming. With the implementation of access policies, an instruction manual for access configuration was created, with the department manager responsible for guiding its suppliers, which has restricted actions in the remote environment. In this way, it was possible to reduce the load on the IT Infrastructure (Support) area of the institution.

Another benefit brought by the Secure Roaming connection was the possibility for the Automation Supervisor to have direct access to the production line in case of problems, reducing the downtime from factory. Furthermore, now international suppliers no longer need to travel from their country of origin to the Berneck plant, which represents a reduction in the cost of implementing and supporting the industrial plants.

And the positive results of the project do not stop there. There were also improvements in link management and connectivity with remote units, since, with the ease and agility in monitoring, the debugging time of link stops was reduced.

Finally, a higher level of security was achieved with the IDS/IPS and antivirus modules installed in the departments. The result of this was the attenuation of common problems at the stations and also the reduction of the load on the Support Department.

Currently, the company has at its headquarters firewalls in cluster, called Firewall Core, and three more departmental firewalls. In another remote unit with the same complexity, it has clustered firewalls and two departmental firewalls. The other remote units add five firewalls, positioned to ensure communication with the headquarters through VPNs. In total, the customer has 12 firewalls implemented, with a projected growth in 2014 of 5 more firewalls for new units and departments.

“It is an innovative project, which required interconnection and interdependence between administrative and industrial network structures. As the model proved to be functional and profitable, it became a mandatory standard for all Berneck production lines and units. As a result, Aker and Softwall have come to occupy a prominent place among our main suppliers, given the essential nature of the product and the quality of the service they offer”, comments Jeferson Kadowaki, IT Infrastructure Manager at Berneck.
