Adobe announced the acquisition of Aviary, a privately held company that develops SDKs (software development kits) for creative applications. With millions of people using Aviary's technology-based photo editing applications and thousands of developers using the company's SDKs across multiple mobile platforms, the acquisition accelerates Adobe's strategy to transform Creative Cloud into a platform for third-party applications through a new Creative SDK. Currently in development, Adobe's new Creative SDK is a software library that allows developers to leverage Adobe's creative technologies to build mobile apps and create new connections between mobile and desktop apps and Adobe Creative Cloud services.

"This is great news for developers because thousands of mobile apps will be able to integrate with industry-leading tools like Photoshop CC, in addition to new Creative Cloud services," says Scott Belsky, Vice President, Creative Cloud & Behance Ecosystem at Adobe.

Adobe's Creative SDK provides access to APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), previously available only to the company's engineering teams. Examples include: browsing files stored in Creative Cloud and extracting elements from PSD files; Adobe's "Touch Slide" software for drawing in straight lines; as well as cloud image publishing services such as Content-Aware Fill and Upright. Adobe Photoshop Mix, a newly released mobile app for iOS, leverages these new APIs and offers some of Adobe's best technologies for applying Photoshop visuals and compositing images. Adobe's Creative SDK is already in developer testing phase and a beta release is expected soon.
