ACATE and NEOWAY release the 2019 Tech Report Study

The productivity of Santa Catarina companies in the technology sector is the highest among the six main hubs of technology and innovation in Brazil (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Santa Catarina). The State records an average turnover of R$ 100 thousand per worker, when the national average does not exceed R$ 72 thousand. It is not only in productivity that Santa Catarina stands out: with R$ 15.8 billion in total revenue, of which the companies associated with ACATE correspond to 64%, the technology sector already represents 5.8% of the economy of Santa Catarina. There are more than 15 thousand entrepreneurs and approximately 51.8 thousand employees.

The data are from the Tech Report 2019, a study carried out by the Observatory of the Catarinense Technology Association (ACATE) and by Neoway and launched on August 15, during the second edition of the Startup Summit, in Florianópolis. For Daniel Leipnitz, president of ACATE, this edition of the study provides valuable data for understanding the evolution of Santa Catarina's technology and innovation ecosystem. “We are already the 4th largest hub in terms of number of employees in the IT sector, and the 6th in revenue, number of entrepreneurs and number of companies. We have the highest productivity index per worker in Brazil, and the second highest density of startups in the country, with 4.9 companies for every thousand inhabitants. The strength of our ecosystem is already known, now what we want is to make exchanges between the diverse communities of innovation and technology existing in Brazil and in the world, exchanging experiences, generating learning and expanding our capacity to increasingly encourage the development of companies and entrepreneurs, ”says Daniel.

In Brazil, the technology sector has a turnover of R$ 301.7 billion, which corresponds to 4.4% of the national GDP. “In the ranking, among the six largest technology hubs in Brazil (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Santa Catarina), our state is the leader, with R$ 1.4 million in average revenue, which corresponds to the R$ 15.8 total sales divided by the total number of active companies we have, which is 11.2 thousand ”, highlights Daniel. Of these, more than 4 thousand emerged in the last four years, showing that the environment is increasingly favorable for entrepreneurship. Among the cities of Santa Catarina, Florianópolis (2,438), Joinville (1,473) and Blumenau (1,218) hotspots, which concentrate 5,129 companies in the Santa Catarina technology sector (45%).

Separating the results by regions, the highlights of the study were Greater Florianópolis, with an increase of R$ 100 million in its turnover and 10 thousand employees from 2017 to 2018, the North region, which had an increase of R$ 200 million in its turnover, and the regions of the Itajaí Valley, which maintained its high revenue with the technology sector, of R$ 3.4 billion, and the West, which maintained R$ 1.2 billion.

The differentials of associates

At the launch event of Tech Report 2019, Daniel highlighted the importance of ACATE's role in its more than 30 years of operation in the technology and innovation ecosystem of Santa Catarina. “The association brings together technology companies of different sizes, segments of activity and regions and promotes events and training that greatly favor the development of each one of them”, he explains. According to data from Tech Report 2019, the productivity of technology companies from Santa Catarina associated with ACATE exceeds the average of other technology companies in the state as a whole, exceeding R$ 153 thousand.

In the ranking of the ten municipalities with the highest productivity, Florianópolis occupies the first place, with R$ 113.9 thousand in revenue, Blumenau the second, with R$ 106.4 thousand, and Joinville is in third, with R$ 95 thousand. São Paulo is in tenth place, with R$ 76 thousand. “When we talk about mesoregions of the State, the South is the region that stands out the most, with R$ 225 thousand coming from associated companies, compared to R$ 85 thousand from non-members, and the Serra region, which invoices R$ 94 thousand for each employee, while the non-members do not reach R$ 40 thousand ”, concludes Daniel.

Partnership with Neoway

The methodology for preparing the report involves the analysis of information brought by Neoway's Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence platform. The tool provides a snapshot of Santa Catarina companies considering the active registration status, assumed sales *, year of opening, location, information about partners and employees. The data collected are from the Federal Revenue, Commercial Boards and Annual Social Information List (RAIS). In addition, technical producers used INEP, UNESCO and CAGED as complementary sources.
