Association applies Industrial Internet technology to Smart Traffic Lights with the aim of improving mobility in the municipality

The Brazilian Industrial Internet Association (ABII), which aims to promote the accelerated growth of the Industrial Internet in the country, announced the testbed of smart traffic lights, in partnership with the City Hall of Joinville (SC). The Industrial Internet solution will transform traditional traffic lights into Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) with the use of thermal traffic cameras, an unprecedented technology in Brazil. The system allows detection of pedestrians, cyclists and automobiles with 100% accuracy, without interference from rain, fog or any weather conditions.

The pilot solution will be executed during the first half of this year and is being led by the experts that make up the ABII Testbeds Working Groups, who selected this project based on the criteria of a high degree of innovation, impact and scalability.

Installed in some traffic lights in the city, the thermal traffic cameras collect, in real time, data from the roads, such as the flow of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, allowing smart traffic lights to make autonomous decisions about the interval setting in which they should operate. , giving preference to traffic on roads with greater congestion, for example. In addition, the system will be able to generate statistics and insights that will help the city of Joinville in making urban planning decisions, making the city connected with the most current concepts of Industrial Internet and Smart and Human Cities.

The growth of fleets in large urban centers leads to the number of problems related to accidents and the population's level of stress due to the number of hours spent in traffic jams. According to the latest IBGE fleet update, in 2016, Joinville already registered more than 380,000 vehicles – a number that continues to grow. In Brazil, the fleet increased by 119% in the last 10 years and the road structure cannot keep up with this growth.

“The adoption of Intelligent Traffic Lights guarantees a more efficient, agile and safe traffic for the city. We believe that collaborative work added to the Industrial Internet will bring gains that directly impact the quality of life of all citizens, as well as Joinville's economy and logistics, allowing for an intelligent and safe improvement in urban mobility. The Industrial Internet can generate impacts in all sectors, including manufacturing, agribusiness, health, transport, energy and cities”, comments the president of ABII, José Rizzo.
