ABES (Brazilian Association of Software Companies) has just released internet monitoring data for the third quarter of 2019, which accounted for 20,753 illegal content removed, representing a drop of 8.5% compared to the same quarter in 2018. However, when the time interval between January and September this year was analyzed, there was an increase of 4% compared to the same period in 2018. The internet monitoring action is a service provided by ABES to its associates since 2005, proactively and daily, with the purpose of tracking irregular offers related to these companies' software programs.

"ABES 'Internet Monitoring Sector tracks the existence of irregular offers related to affiliate companies' software programs and removes them from the internet. However, as we represent more than 2,000 companies, some of the illegal content may go unnoticed by the service. For this reason, associates that detect an illegal website, link or advertisement that violates their ownership can send the content to the Internet Monitoring Sector to provide for its removal. Of the Free Market, through which we were able to identify and report several pirated products at once. This way, members who make a request through the Association will have the pirated material removed within 24 hours ", explains Rodolfo Fücher, president of ABES.

According to the internet monitoring report, the number of websites removed from the internet this quarter was almost the same as last year: between July and September this year there were 19, while in 2018 there were 20, representing a small drop of 5 , 2%. The number of advertisements removed by the Association in this period increased by 7%, from 11.9 thousand to 12.8 thousand. Therefore, the factor that actually led to the percentage decrease of content removed in the third quarter of this year compared to last year was the number of dropped links, which went from 10,543 to 7,882, showing a drop of 33.7%. Below is a month-by-month comparison of the categories of ads and links in the quarter in 2018 and 2019:

For ABES, this quarterly decrease is something to be celebrated. "We understand that the drop in the removal of illegal content in the quarter is the result of the work carried out by the Internet Monitoring Sector of ABES since 2005, since the number of websites, links or advertisements dropped is directly linked to its offer - the smaller the offer, less removal. However, despite the results for the quarter, it is important to note that this type of content, in addition to infringing the Copyright of Computer Programs, can bring several risks to the devices on which they are installed, such as viruses and malware , make the device vulnerable to hackers and make it impossible to support technical assistance ", explains Fücher.

However, despite the drop in the removal of pirated content in the quarter, the period from January to September registered an increase of almost 4% when compared to the same period in 2018. In this scenario, the number of links was the only one that decreased, suffering a drop of 11.1%. The number of dropped ads increased by 14.5%, from around 33,000 to 38,000, and that of websites increased by 18.4%, from 53 to 65.

"For now, we see this growth as a partial result, as we still lack data from the last quarter to find out if there was, in fact, an increase or decrease in irregular content removed from the internet in 2019 compared to 2018. However, regardless of the final result , we will continue to carry out the monitoring service, proactively and daily, and work with the objective of eradicating, or reducing on a large scale, the supply of illegal content on the internet. We have at ABES the purpose of collaborating in the construction of a more digital and less unequal, leading to opportunities for all. In this proposal, the ethical use of technology, such as duly licensed software, becomes essential to ensure an environment conducive to innovation and competitive globally ", concludes the president of ABES.
