Action against piracy eliminated downloads irregular

In the first half of 2014, ABES removed more than 28,000 items from the air between advertisements on auction sites, websites and links that gave access to illegal software downloads. The Internet Monitoring action, which has been going on for over ten years, tracks the irregular offers of computer programs owned by the entity's associates.

Among all the monitoring results, the removing links was the best performing stock. In the first six months of the year, 18,297 removed links were recorded, an increase of 39,13%, compared to last year, with emphasis on the month of April, which registered the highest volume excluded, more than 4,200 excluded links.

Considering only the auction sites, the entity eliminated 9,160 advertisements in the first six months of the year, a jump of 30.9% in relation to the total eliminated in the same period in 2013. Still in that period, 32 websites were taken down for violating intellectual property rights by offering pirated software.

Software piracy in Brazil

In Brazil, 50% of installed computer programs are pirated, according to a study by BSA - The Software Alliance, published in June this year. The Internet Monitoring action is one of ABES 'efforts to further reduce this scenario. “Piracy in Brazil has already changed a lot in recent years, in the 1980s more than 90% of software was pirated. Currently, Brazilians are more aware of the risks of using illegal programs. This fact, combined with new licensing options, such as the software as a service, has contributed to reduce this index more and more ”, highlights Jorge Sukarie, president of ABES.

In addition to the Internet Monitoring initiative, citizens who want to cooperate with the investigative efforts of law enforcement authorities across the country to identify outbreaks of piracy can do so via the portal Report Software Piracy: www.denunciepirataria.org.br. Complaints are anonymous and can also be made through the “Denounce Piracy” application, available on IOS and Android platforms.

Monitoring process

The entity identifies content on the internet that violates the Copyright of Computer Programs, which is owned by one of its members. After this process, the entity notifies the portal and access providers, through a request to remove the content from the air for infringing copyright, based on Brazilian law.

One of the supporters of this work is the PPPI - Intellectual Property Protection Program, from Mercado Livre, which promotes the removal of illegal content that is within its portal. “The quick return we get from PPPI helps us to remove illegal offers in less than 24 hours,” says Sukarie.
