Brazil, Digital Country Initiative was presented to parliamentarians

This Tuesday morning (22/11), ABES promoted a breakfast with members of the Parliamentary Front for Science, Technology, Research and Innovation at the Chamber of Deputies, in Brasília (DF), to discuss data protection and present the Brazil, Digital Country initiative, led by the association.

Francisco Camargo, president of ABES, opened the meeting and highlighted the growth of the entity, which has around 1100 associated companies and another 1000 partner companies, through regional partnerships. The executive also recalled that the internet brings together more than 1 billion websites, more than 3.2 billion users worldwide, not to mention the exponential growth in the number of connected devices. “This information confirms the importance of discussing the benefits and challenges of a digital society”, he considered.

Fábio Rua, director of Government Relations and Regulatory Affairs at IBM and coordinator of the ABES Regulatory Committee, spoke about the objectives of the Brazil, Digital Country initiative, which are: democratizing access to information and involving a growing portion of the population in this discussion about the use and protection of data in the digital society. “We have a positive agenda to share with deputies and the Brazilian population focused on economic growth, innovation and improving the living conditions of Brazilians”, he emphasized.

The coordinator also recalled that in this 21st century, with the advent of new business models and new technologies, it is important to reevaluate the way in which debates on regulations develop. Currently, a series of meetings and hearings are underway in Congress on the Data Protection bill (PL 4060/12), given that Brazil does not have legislation on the subject yet. “This debate transcends the technology sector and goes beyond thinking about privacy. We are also talking about security, digital inclusion, transparency, improvements in public services, among other impacts.”

On the occasion, Fabio cited some of the Federal Government's own actions in improving services, data integration and service to citizens, such as the project to launch the single national identity and the construction of the digital citizenship platform. He also informed that the Brasil, País Digital initiative has several institutional partners and that its Facebook page has more than 60 thousand followers, signaling social engagement around the subject. “This is a very relevant debate”, said federal deputy Izalci Lucas (PSDB – DF), president of the Parliamentary Front for Science, Technology, Research and Innovation, who emphasized the importance of sensitizing Brazilian society around the discussion on data protection. data. He also commented that the Chamber of Deputies is open for ABES to hold new meetings and participate in public hearings on the PL. “The computerization of public management will allow Brazil to spend less and improve services to the population. We have made progress, but there is still a way to go, which includes greater control of public spending and systems that communicate”, he concluded. These are projects at the federal, state and municipal levels that cover the management and protection of data flow, among other aspects.
