MCTIC and IoT.br

Guilherme Corrêa, Coordinator of Technological Innovation & IoT at the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC), spoke about the development of the National IoT Plan (IoT.br), a topic that began to be discussed by the federal government, in 2012, and has remained among the top priorities ever since. “The plan's main verticals are cities, agribusiness, industry and health. We are implementing IoT cameras in each vertical, which will help to carry out the planned actions, where MCTIC is always present in partnership with other finalistic ministries. The next steps include the search for international partnerships, especially with the United States and European countries, and alignment with Anatel, in relation to the regulatory agenda that touches many points of IoT”, explained Guilherme. Publicizing the Digital Transformation Observatory in the market and the Smart Cities Booklet with mayors are two points that will also be worked on by MCTIC.

BNDES and IoT

 Edward Kaplan

Eduardo Kaplan, Leader of the BNDES' Smart Cities Initiative, discussed the bank's role in developing the plan and implementing the planned actions. He also highlighted the importance of this study, whose elaboration did not focus only on technologies, but went beyond and brought analyzes of the positive impacts on the generation of quality jobs, on the increase in Brazilian competitiveness and on the improvement of the population's quality of life. “The study that generated the plan had a high degree of participation from society, several public consultations. In the case of cities, we expect improvements in sectors such as public safety, mobility, energy efficiency and public sanitation”. The executive mentioned the progress of the BNDES Pilots IoT projects, whose funds for the approved proposals began to be released this year.

Public policy proposals with scientific rigor

Thiago Camargo

To end the panel, Thiago Camargo, ABES consultant and former secretary of Digital Policies at MCTIC, highlighted human capital and health, as well as security and privacy. as areas that concentrate the main challenges for IoT plans. He also spoke of the importance of the federal government encouraging demand, that is, making the technologies reach more Brazilians. Another highlighted point was the importance of academia to develop and propose public policies in smart cities based on studies carried out with scientific rigor, based on analyzes of the impacts, errors and successes of initiatives carried out in Brazil and around the world.

In line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs, the IEA/USP UrbanSus Cycle aims to reflect on the role of cities and encourage good practices, sharing sustainable urban solutions through innovative social, environmental and urban technologies. Its purpose is to be a space for greater understanding and propagation of the theme of innovation in academia, society and the public sector, aiming at building a culture of sustainability in the development processes of cities.
