Represented by Werter Padilha, coordinator of the ABES IoT Committee, the entity participated in a mission promoted by EMBRAPA in the interior of São Paulo, which presented IoT projects for livestock, precision agriculture and telecommunications, held from September 10 to 12. This activity continued the international IoT mission in agribusiness that visited, in the first half of 2018, research projects and institutions in three countries of the European Community: Belgium, Holland and Italy.
 
 Fazenda Canchim applies new technologies
 
The group, made up of representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, USP, ABES, Telebrás, the Dutch Embassy and Consulate and CPqD, visited Fazenda Canchim, in São Carlos (SP) on the first day. They learned about national projects for the application of new technologies for animal and plant genetic improvement, cattle sensing and monitoring, milk production and sustainable development linked to agribusiness.
 
 Drones used in soil mapping and monitoring
 
The National Precision Agriculture Reference Laboratory integrated the roadmap for the second day, in which researchers are developing projects in precision agriculture and agricultural implements, which include IoT applications. In the projects, Embrapa maintains partnerships with companies and investments from national and international bodies, such as Finep, with emphasis on the use of drones in mapping and monitoring the ground. “Our R&D capability has been recognized worldwide. We have technology generation for the entire agribusiness production chain. It is important to make the connection between the results of applied research viable, taking them to producers, who still do not know what academia and research centers have to offer. But the good news is that there are dedicated people in the public and private sectors working to untie this knot”, analyzed Werter.
 

São Martinho Power Plant
 
The third day included a visit to Usina São Martinho, in Pradópolis (SP), where the CPqD telecommunications project was presented, implemented on a 135,000-hectare farm, through the development of an entire mobile broadband network infrastructure (LTE) for own use, which will allow connecting devices and streamlining the entire communication and logistics chain. “It is a unique project in Brazil, with in-vehicle video cameras, sensors and smart vehicle terminals, which will be placed in about 900 vehicles, including trucks and harvesters. It provides the possibility to talk to people there in the plantations, follow everything, monitor, extract data. It is a mission critical project, as the plant runs 24 hours a day, every day of the week. IoT, artificial intelligence, analytics, predictive analysis, everything becomes viable, with a guaranteed return on investment”, explained the ABES coordinator.
 
As next steps, Werter Padilha plans to bring these initiatives closer to ABES members in order to encourage partnerships. “Agribusiness is one of the main economic sectors in Brazil and in the world, one of those prioritized by the National IoT Plan and with relevant technologies, in which the intelligence that software provides must be added”, he concludes.
