On June 18, the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) promoted, at its headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, the event “BNDES IoT Pilots: Testing applied Internet of Things solutions”, in which he presented the regulation for the selection of pilot projects of Internet of Things (IoT) technological solutions for the Cities, Health and Rural environments. More than 300 people gathered at the place and ABES was present at the meeting with Jamile Sabatini Marques, director of Innovation and Development at the entity, and Werter Padilha, coordinator of the IoT Committee.

BNDES Pilots of IoT is an offshoot of the study “Internet of Things: an action plan for Brazil”, supported by BNDES in partnership with the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC) and led by the McKinsey/Fundação CPqD/Pereira Neto Macedo Advogados consortium.

The objective of the initiative was to bring together Institutes of Technology (ITs), solution providers and users so that they could exchange information and establish connections for the formulation and execution of projects together. With this, they will be able to structure consortia to participate in the selection and obtain financial resources from the BNDES for the development of IoT projects in the three verticals prioritized by the National IoT Plan.

The BNDES Business Director, Claudia Prates, and the Superintendent of the Industry and Services Area of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Júlio Raimundo, participated in the opening session in the morning. In the afternoon, there were presentations by the ITs to the companies, including CPqD, Poli – USP and CESAR, in addition to the networking opportunity.

The total budget for IoT projects is R$ 20 million using non-reimbursable funds. In order to leverage total investments, projects must provide for the application of financial resources as a counterpart, and BNDES will support up to 50% of the cost of each selected initiative. The minimum amount of BNDES support for each pilot project plan will be R$ 1 million.

“The event was very good, integrating companies, research centers and government. It is very important for the country to have so many research centers demonstrating their work and seeking partnerships with companies, so that IoT solution proposals are developed and reach the market”, highlighted Jamile Sabatini.

Werter Padilha highlighted the importance of this step in the implementation strategy of the National IoT Plan. “Brazil has drawn attention on the international scene, as I have seen recently at events I have been to in Europe, Asia and the United States. The continuity of actions will contribute to consolidating our role in the IoT ecosystem, as the country has companies, research centers of excellence and public policies are being built, based on a broad and consistent study”, he evaluated.
