Jorge Sukarie and other leaders discussed the fight against piracy in the country

At the invitation of the US Consul General Dennis Hankins, ABES President Jorge Sukarie participated in a meeting on December 3 at the Consulate in São Paulo to discuss the fight against piracy in Brazil. Vice-Consul Bonnie Mace, Rafael Bellini (FNCP – National Forum Against Piracy), Igor Donato (ABPI – Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property) and Cristiane Foja (Adidas Group) also attended the meeting.

“The meeting was an opportunity to present the participants' views on how the fight against piracy is going in the country and how the consulate could contribute. The piracy rate in Brazil has decreased in recent years, but we need to reduce it even further”, explains Sukarie.

ABES regularly provides logistical support to the actions of police authorities in several regions of Brazil to repress the commercialization of illegal software. For the entity, these actions are important to weaken the activity that opposes the economic growth of the country.

The entity, in partnership with the BSA – Business Software Alliance, also maintains a portal for anonymous complaints against software piracy (http://www.denunciepirataria.org.br). According to the study by BSA and IDC, in 2014 Brazil will have a loss of US$ 2.848 billion with piracy, which removes 20 thousand jobs annually in the country.
