The Legal Entrepreneur initiative, carried out by the Intellectual Property Defense Committee, of the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES), received the Gold Award in the Economic Axis category for its work to raise awareness of the use of original software in all segments of the Brazilian economy. . Promoted by the National Council for Combating Piracy and Crimes Against Intellectual Property (CNCP), linked to the Ministry of Justice, the distinction was part of the National Award for Combating Piracy 2013.

The award event, which took place today (3) in Brasília (DF), is part of the commemorations of the National Day to Combat Piracy. “We are very proud and happy for the recognition of this initiative that was launched in March of this year. Software piracy works against the country's sustainable economic growth and prosperity, and Brazilian businessmen are increasingly aware of the damage caused by using illegal copies of computer programs”, highlights Rodrigo Paiva, coordinator of the Defense Committee. of ABES Intellectual Property.

“Using computer programs without the correct licensing brings great risks to the business. In addition to having its image linked to an illegal activity, the company can respond criminally with a penalty, which can vary from six months to two years, or be fined with values up to three thousand times the price of each program used or reproduced” , points out Jorge Sukarie, president of ABES.

The awardees were chosen by a commission made up of CNCP representatives and guests knowledgeable on the subject. Among the names are: Senator Vanessa Grazziotin, STJ Minister Sidnei Beneti, Attorney Eunice P. Amorim, Luis Carlos Furlan, CNCP President Flávio Crocce Caetano and CNCP Executive Secretary Rodolfo Tamanaha.

Software Piracy

Data from BSA – The Software Alliance show that the country still lives with a software piracy rate of 53%. The same entity also points out that if this type of piracy were reduced in Brazil by 10 percentage points over the next four years, more than 12,300 jobs would be created and more than US$ 4 billion dollars would be returned to the Brazilian economy. 

Legal Entrepreneur

The Legal Entrepreneur Initiative is part of ABES' efforts to reduce the use of pirated or non-compliant software in Brazil, through alerts to Brazilian entrepreneurs about the legal risks provided for in the laws against Unfair Competition and Defense of Intellectual Property. and possible technical losses when using pirated software.

The initiative regularly promotes educational activities with event promotions, partnerships with local entities and the offering of products to ABES members. In December, awareness-raising activities will be intensified in the cities of Jaraguá do Sul (SC), Barueri (SP) and Salvador (BA).

The campaign counts on the partnership of government and industry entities: ABPI – Brazilian Intellectual Property Association; APEX – Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency; BSA – The Software Alliance; CNC – National Confederation of Commerce; CNCP – National Council to Combat Piracy; ETCO – Brazilian Institute of Competition Ethics and MBC – Movimento Brasil Competitivo.

The portal has strengthened the investigative work of police authorities across the country in identifying cases of sales and use of piracy.
