Cities face increasingly complex and urgent challenges, ranging from population growth and rapid urbanization to the need to make urban environments more sustainable, resilient, and connected. In this context, the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES) has taken significant steps to catalyze essential transformations in the Brazilian scenario. One of the most relevant is the creation of Business Verticals, an initiative that seeks to structure solutions and promote integration between companies and key sectors of the economy.
Among these verticals, the Smart Cities vertical stands out as a strategic tool to enable innovative projects and ensure the implementation of actions that promote the digital transformation of Brazilian cities. Led by Jamile Sabatini Marques, Director of Innovation and Promotion at ABES, and Paula Faria, creator of Connected Smart Cities, the vertical began its activities focusing on government and digital transformation, mobility and urban logistics. The vertical aims to provide an environment that is favorable to knowledge sharing, networking and collaboration among the members of the Association, enhancing opportunities for business growth and development, as well as connecting with the public sector.
During meetings held by ABES, such as the one in December 2024, concrete and viable ways were discussed to advance the incorporation of technologies that truly meet social and urban demands.
The Smart Cities Business Vertical aims to support both companies and municipal administrations in the implementation of integrated technological solutions. This includes the modernization of urban infrastructure, such as smart public lighting systems, and the use of digital platforms for monitoring and analyzing traffic, security and mobility. These solutions promote operational efficiency and make the urban environment safer and more welcoming for everyone.
The impact of Smart Cities Business Verticals goes beyond the technological sphere, directly influencing areas such as regulation and planning. Through initiatives such as the Investment Partnerships Program (PPI) and the regulation of the Contribution for the Cost of Public Lighting Services (COSIP), recently discussed in meetings, it is possible to align the demands of the public authorities with the expectations of the private sector. These actions facilitate the implementation of innovative structural projects, while ensuring transparency and economic sustainability.
Initiatives like ABES’s demonstrate how it is possible to create an ecosystem in which innovation and financing go hand in hand. Digital transformation is essential to face current challenges and build a more equitable and efficient future. By strengthening collaboration between different actors, the Smart Cities Business Vertical highlights how technology can be used to create real and feasible solutions.
ABES, with its Smart Cities Business Vertical, positions itself as an important mobilizing agent, engaging in processes that aim to transform the future of cities. By opening space for innovation, facilitating dialogue between sectors and driving the adoption of emerging technologies, the Association reaffirms its commitment to the urban and social development of Brazil. Furthermore, to further strengthen, streamline and expand the perspectives of action, the partnership with Connected Smart Cities stands out as a source of differentiation. Thus, through collaborative initiatives, we are together paving the way for more intelligent, human and connected cities.
