The Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES) has taken several initiatives to reduce the number of companies that use unlicensed software in production, which has affected various sectors of the economy. In addition to a website with information to guide the market and also to receive reports of piracy, the entity is preparing the launch of the “Legal Entrepreneur” campaign, which aims to create an environment of fair competition in the country. The internal initiative also aims to gain in the external market for the coming years. “Several countries have adopted barriers against practitioners of unfair competition and Brazil can take advantage of this”, says Gérson Schmitt, president of ABES, when commenting that Brazil has the lowest piracy rate among emerging countries, with 53%, against 77% in China, and 63% from India and Russia. In 2008, the country index was 58%.
