Entity removed more than 33,000 links throughout the year for violating intellectual property rights

In 2014, the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES) removed 51,656 advertisements, links and websites with content that gave access to files in violation of the entity's Software Copyright. The action has been taking place for eleven years and is carried out by the entity's Internet Monitoring sector.

The association recorded 33,313 links that were removed for violating intellectual property rights, a result close to that recorded in 2013, at 35,822. 18,279 ads promoting pirated products were also down. The amount remained stable in relation to the previous year, with a slight increase in relation to 17,468 in 2013.

In addition, the organization was responsible for taking down 64 websites that offered illegal software downloads. The survey shows a small drop in this practice compared to 2013, with 76 pages.

The association continuously monitors the internet and notifies the portal itself and the access providers when it identifies content that violates the Copyright of Computer Programs. This notification is made by means of a removal request and what legally implies to keep this information on the air based on the legislation in force in the country.

According to the entity's president, Jorge Sukarie, this action by ABES aims to protect both companies and consumers. “By removing the links and websites that promote piracy, we protect consumers who could be exposed to viruses and, consequently, to the theft of private information. And also the companies themselves, who are at risk of suffering irreparable damage when using illegal products ”, he says.

For another year, ABES had the support of a partnership with the PPPI – Program for the Protection of Intellectual Property, from Mercado Livre, which promotes the removal of pirated products advertised on its portal. “PPPI has supported us and acts quickly, as it validates our monitoring. In this way, we managed to remove illegal content from the air in less than 24 hours”, concludes Sukarie.

Internet monitoring is part of ABES' efforts to promote healthy competition in the economy. Anyone can cooperate with the investigative efforts of law enforcement authorities across the country to identify hotspots of piracy. You can make reports through the Anonymous Reports Against Software Piracy portal: www.denunciepirataria.org.br.
