The recent cuts in investments made by the government in science and technology had repercussions yesterday in the debate "The strategic role of Science, Technology and Innovation for the Development of Brazil", promoted by the Joint Parliamentary Front of Science and Technology, Research and Innovation of the Congress, chaired by Senator Izalci Lucas (PSDB-DF), on September 12 at the National Congress.

The meeting was attended by experts and representatives of the Executive Branch, including the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Júlio Semeghini, and the Secretary of Advocacy for Competition and Competitiveness of the Ministry of Economy, César Mattos. Rodolfo Fücher, president of ABES, followed the debates.

“We cannot allow cuts to continue. Our budget today is smaller than it was 15 years ago,” said Senator Izalci. In his opinion, it is necessary to debate the importance of innovation, science and technology for the country's development and find alternatives to investment cuts.

The Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Júlio Semeghini, defended the need to reduce bureaucracy in the sector. “We need to allow partnerships and reduce the bureaucracy of innovation processes. It's amazing the time we spend, and the cost comes from the little money we have to take care of it”, he said.

The meeting was the second on the parliamentary front. The next meeting, scheduled for September 26, will deal with the Information Technology Law.
