Startup may receive funding of up to R$ 1 million to develop its solution

A survey by the KPMG consultancy reveals that 88% of companies consider collaboration with startups essential for their own innovation strategy. On the other side 54% of these innovative companies believe that collaboration with a large corporation is essential to business success. The industry, which once had a GDP share of 21.6%, plummeted 10 points in 30 years, reaching 11.4% in 2015. “It is a fact that an important part of our industry is at least 15 years behind compared to first world countries. There is a lack of investment in technology, innovation and efficient processes”, explains Guto Ferreira, president of the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI).

At the other end of the economy are startups, generally small companies, with young people in charge and innovative solutions. “The largest transport company in the world (UBER) does not have a single vehicle of its own, but it has thousands of drivers worldwide and is worth more than the main Brazilian banks. This is called innovation and this is what our industry needs”, emphasizes Ferreira. Despite the success of some companies, a study produced by the accelerator Startup Farm points out that 74% of these innovative Brazilian companies close after 5 years. “This happens for several reasons, among them are: lack of planning, financing difficulties and, mainly, not having the buyer or user of that solution or product. It's no use creating something amazing in theory but that doesn't solve someone's problem. It is exactly in this role of connection that ABDI will play”, he reveals.

After 7 months of construction, with more than 800 players collaborating to formulate the project, ABDI has just launched pre-registration for the unprecedented Startup Industry Connection Program. Any company or industry can apply. Up to 10 industries from all over the country will be chosen and for each of these 5 startups they will work to align the demands and expectations of that company. The deadline is May 12th and the public notice is available in the website

In total, up to 50 innovative companies will receive a contribution of R$ 200 thousand each. After this first process, 10 will be chosen. The industry will negotiate directly with that company the business model, contract and values. In this second phase, the startup will receive a new contribution of up to R$ 800 thousand from ABDI and partners, in addition to the continuity of all support from accelerators, financial institutions and other development entities.

In total, the program will allocate R$ 50 million over 3 years. For the CEO of General Electric (GE) in Brazil, Gilberto Peralta, the startup's role is fundamental in the innovation process of a company. “No company that wants to be at the Leading Edge of innovation, the future and development can do without working with these innovative companies. These people have new ideas and the result of this union is extremely positive, not only for GE, but for all companies”, he points out. The agency's innovation manager, Elisa Carlos, explains the importance of the project for the future of the sector. “Companies like NET (telecommunications) have already announced a partnership with startups to exchange their more than 8 million modems, making them national 100%. This is the movement of the moment. We want to maximize it. Make the base of good startups grow and have support”, he concludes.
