The Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI), supervised by the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services (MDIC), was present at the ABES DESAFIOS DA IOT event, held on 11/06, in São Paulo, with an extensive presentation led by Carlos Frees, the agency's Smart Cities specialist.

Frees discussed the advances in the technology demonstration environment for Smart Cities, which is being built from the technical cooperation agreement with the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (INMETRO), in Xerém, RJ. The space represents an important opportunity for tests and evaluations in real conditions of technologies or solutions developed in Brazil that can be implemented in Brazilian cities and exported to other countries. So far, more than 160 technological solutions have registered, including water quality monitoring, urban solid waste treatment, smart traffic lights, wind power generation, public education big data, among dozens of different applications.

The executive also spoke about the recent project to create Living Labs – Vivo Laboratory of Smart Cities to demonstrate technologies, the first of which will be installed at the Itaipu Technological Park (PTI). “By seeing the technology working, the mayor can understand how this solution can help his municipality. PTI's focus is on smart lighting, aerial monitoring by drones and mobility by electric vehicles”, he explained. Itaipu currently has a large flow of visits from public managers from Brazil and other countries, which should contribute to the internationalization of technologies. Other partnerships are already being evaluated with Universidade Mackenzie (São Paulo), Porto Digital (Pernambuco) and the UFRJ Technological Park (Rio de Janeiro).

ABDI also has a PPP project, in its initial phase, for the implementation of technologies in real environments, in which the agency will provide resources for the transformation of municipalities into smart cities, with the first location selected being Juazeiro do Norte (CE).
