ABB and IBM announced a strategic collaboration that brings together ABB's digital industry offering, ABB Ability, with IBM's Watson Internet of Things cognitive capability. Those who benefit from this are companies in the service concessionaire, industry, transport and infrastructure sectors, which will now have more complete solutions available.

Customers will benefit from ABB's expertise and its broad portfolio of digital solutions that are now associated with IBM's expertise in artificial intelligence and cognitive computing for different industrial segments. The first two solutions developed in partnership between ABB Ability and Watson will bring real-time cognitive insights to the shop floor and smart grids.

"This powerful combination truly marks the next level of industrial technology, moving beyond connected systems that simply gather data to machines and industrial operations that use data to sense, analyze, optimize and take action that leads to greater uptime. activity, speed and production," said ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer. "With an installed base of 70 million connected devices, 70,000 digital control systems and 6,000 enterprise software solutions, ABB is an industry leader and has a four-decade long history of creating digital solutions for customers. IBM is a leader in artificial intelligence and cognitive computing. Together, IBM and ABB will create powerful solutions for customers to benefit from the Fourth Industrial Revolution."

Line of innovative solutions

The range of innovative solutions developed by ABB and IBM will help companies to tackle some of their biggest industrial challenges in a completely new way, such as improving quality control, reducing downtime, increasing process speed and throughput. industrial. These solutions will move beyond current connected systems, which simply collect data, to cognitive industrial machines that use it to understand, sense, rationalize and take action to support industrial workers, helping to eliminate redundant tasks and inefficient processes.

"This collaboration between ABB and IBM will bring Watson even closer to industrial applications – from manufacturing, utilities, transportation and more," said Ginni Rometty, president and CEO of IBM. "Data generated from industrial products, facilities and systems hold the promise of exponential advances in innovation, efficiency and safety. Only with Watson's broad cognitive capabilities and the unique support of our platform for industries does this broad and new resource can be turned into value with confidence. We look forward to working in partnership with ABB in this new industrial era."

Real-time cognitive insights for the shop floor

ABB and IBM will leverage Watson's artificial intelligence to be able to find defects in real time through images provided by ABB's monitoring systems, which will be analyzed by Watson IoT for industry. Previously, these inspections were done manually, which was often a slow and error-prone process. By bringing the power of Watson's real-time cognitive insights directly to the shop floor, in combination with ABB's industrial automation technology, companies will be better equipped to increase the volume flowing through their product lines. production, improving accuracy and consistency.

As parts are used in the manufacturing process, the solution will alert the manufacturer to critical flaws – not visible to the human eye – in assembly quality. This makes it possible for experts to intervene quickly in quality control. Easier identification of defects impacts the production line and helps improve the company's competitiveness, while avoiding costly recalls and reputational damage.
