Journalist Ricardo Capelli will preside over the Brazilian Industrial Development Agency (ABDI). The announcement was made by the vice-president and minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, on social media.
Alckmin was the one who invited Capelli to take on the role. On the 29th, Capelli resigned from the executive secretary of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
“A manager with extensive experience in public administration, Ricardo Capelli has been with us since the beginning of the government. He did an excellent job at the Ministry of Justice and now he has arrived to bring all his knowledge, public spirit and his ability to help us develop the new industrial policy”, said Alckmin in the video.
Alongside Alckmin, Capelli stated that at ABDI he intends to contribute to the resumption of growth in the national economy. “An immense challenge for the country and one that helps to stabilize Brazilian democracy, development, make Brazil grow again, develop, generate jobs, industrial jobs. I received and accepted this invitation with great joy. I am very honored and eager to start working and put Brazil back on the path of development with social justice.”
Capelli was in the executive secretariat of the Ministry of Justice since the beginning of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's government. His departure was already considered certain after the appointment of minister Flávio Dino to the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Dino will be replaced by retired STF minister, Ricardo Lewandowski, whose inauguration is scheduled to take place this Thursday (1st), with the change of the entire top echelon of the department.
Capelli played an important role in the government's reaction to the attacks on January 8, 2023. He was appointed federal intervenor in Public Security in the Federal District after vandals and coup plotters invaded and vandalized the Palácio do Planalto, the National Congress and the Supreme Court building Federal (STF).
As an intervenor, Capelli dismissed and removed officers from the Military Police (PM) and the District Public Security Secretariat itself, in addition to monitoring investigations against those accused of having connived at the attacks on the Three Powers.
ABDI's function is to stimulate digital transformation and the adoption and dissemination of technologies and new business models in companies, industry and services. In recent months, the interim president was Cecilia Vergara, who will remain at the agency.
