Accelerating initiatives to empower people of all generations for the digital economy is an important concern, considering the potential impact of new technologies and generative AI on the job market. To debate the issue, the 13th edition of ABES CONFERENCE, held in São Paulo on November 6, 2023, brought together important experts at the round table CENTERED IN HUMANITY – THE URGENCY OF TECHNOLOGICAL PROFICIENCY IN A DIGITAL SOCIETY. A hybrid and free event, the conference had as its central theme “The Digital Future and the Reinvention of Now and debated various topics, such as the innovation ecosystem, artificial intelligence, the future of work, fostering innovation and sustainability. It was sponsored by ApexBrasil, TOTVS, AWS, Prosper Tech Talents, Caesbra, NIC.br and SND Distribuidora.

In this fast-paced world of innovation, can we say that companies are managing to maintain, encourage and retain the most qualified professionals, in addition to encouraging them in the search for new knowledge? “Digital transformation is a very important issue for all organizations, regardless of their area of activity”, he emphasizes Mariane Guerra, Vice President of Human Resources at ADP in Latin America, mentioning that a survey led by the company indicates that 31% “of professionals express dissatisfaction with the lack of recognition and appreciation of their skills and contributions by managers”.

In terms of education, Luiz Eduardo Drouet, founder and CEO of Prosper Tech Talents / Managing partner Share, states that “a company has to assume the role of educator and the future of work will be influenced by organizations that are able to observe that training is the path and the opportunity to correct the scenario of inclusion. We need to speed up the pace.”

Daniela Faria, Executive Manager of TOTVS University, emphasized that it is vital to break out of the vicious circle. “As long as we continue upskiling and reskiling the same people, we won’t move anywhere. It is imperative that we look at young people who are outside the market in which we operate. When we bring this individual close, we have the chance to influence them with the skills we desire and seek. It’s about starting with what’s possible.”

On the same line, Andrea Leal, Manager of Cloud Education Programs at AWS for America, reports that the training programs that the company maintains train professionals for AWS itself and to serve the market in general. “Those trained are not always used by AWS, but we enable these talents so that they can be absorbed by the market. We also have partners, such as Meta and Localiza, who absorb this human capital”.

“While it is true that, in some cases, the number of technology-enabled professionals may not be sufficient to meet demand, it is important to consider that the nature of technology is constantly evolving and that companies are ready to contribute to soft-enablement skills”, he added Silvia Bassi, Publisher of The Shift and moderator of this round table.

Education and training go together. It is essential to invest in education and training programs that prepare people with the skills needed in the digital economy. This may include the development of updated curricula, online courses, retraining programs, and partnerships between educational institutions and companies to offer internship and practical learning programs.

It is a widely recognized fact that there is a growing demand for technology-enabled professionals in various parts of the world. However, it is important to highlight that the generation of technology-enabled professionals is influenced by a series of complex factors, including education, access to resources and opportunities, government policies and labor market trends.

Additionally, it is important to encourage and support diversity and inclusion in the technology field in order to attract a broader pool of talent. This may involve engaging underrepresented groups such as women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities, and creating inclusive and equal working environments.
