According to a survey carried out by MV, 44% of the hospitals that use the PEP are located in the Southeast and 25% in the South. North is the region that least uses the tool

The use of Electronic Patient Records, also known as PEP, is still far from ideal in Brazil. Considered the main tool for accessing patient health information and histories worldwide, the PEP is used in 44% of hospitals in the Southeast and 25% in the South. The data are from the first edition of the report MoVing The Future – “Panorama of the use of Electronic Patient Records in Brazil”, carried out by MV, a multinational specialized in digital transformation in the health sector, where data were collected from 1,429 institutions in the MV database in All country.

The survey carried out included hospitals of different sizes and entities, being large, medium and small, high, medium and low complexity, and by type of institution: private, public, philanthropic and Santas Casas de Misericórdia. The use of the Electronic Patient Record has become fundamental since the appearance of the first versions of the technology, in the mid-1990s in Brazil, and has transformed health institutions, bringing numerous advantages in the provision of care, by offering the security of patient information to ensure the correct and appropriate treatment for the clinical picture.

According to the report, philanthropic hospitals are the ones that most use PEP MV in Brazil, with 44% among those studied. Private institutions are in second place with 29% and the public system with 27%. When talking about the division by region, the Southeast leads with 44% of hospitals that use the PEP, the South is in second place with 25%, the Northeast region has 15%, the Midwest has 10% and the North has 6%. In the North, public hospitals represent most of the health institutions in the region.

This first edition of MoVing The Future brings an overview of the Electronic Patient Record in Brazil, with historical information, data and surveys on how this technology has changed the routine of health institutions, professionals, specialists and patient care within the country. Every three months, MV intends to bring insights that can contribute to all professionals working in the health sector. “We follow the company's commitment to lead the sector's digital transformation. Making intelligence and materials like this available to the market is also part of the leadership we want to create, motivating and driving the market to continue this transformation, for the good of society”, emphasizes Luis Barros, Marketing, Communication and BI manager at MV.

For the CEO and founder of MV, Paulo Magnus, this first study shows an evolution of the digitalization of health, with more institutions adhering to the PEP, but there is still a long way to go. “With the exception of telemedicine, many of the disruptions have already fallen out of step with the future we expected in the post-pandemic. If we are to truly move forward, I see three critical challenges we will have to address: patient engagement, data integration, and lastly—but far from least—regulation. The patient is digital, but health, not so much”.
