Captana, an unprecedented and innovative solution aimed at helping retailers to prevent or combat product breakdown (lack of products on the shelves), has just arrived in the Brazilian market through the partnership between Seal Sistemas and the French SES-imagotag, world leader in labels shelf electronics (ESL).
The new technology uses high precision wireless Shelfeye mini cameras on the shelves. From photos taken every minute and at a distance of up to 3 meters, they perform comparisons between different images to monitor shelves in real time, indicating automatically if any product is missing from the shelf.
Endowed with IoT (internet of things), artificial intelligence and computer vision resources, the gondola monitoring solution is considered the most advanced, scalable and agile available in the global retail market. Within seconds, she is able to accurately read the information indicated on the price tags and images of the products on the shelves on the opposite side of the aisle, including specific data such as price, brand, manufacturer and expiration date.

Rupture, a metric used worldwide to measure the loss of sales capacity due to the absence of products, is among the biggest challenges facing retailers in Brazil. In January 2021, the indicator reached 12.5% in the country, returning to the highest levels recorded since the beginning of the pandemic, according to Neogrid. SES-imagotag calculates that retailers worldwide may fail to collect up to US$ 1 trillion due to disruptions and problems related to product exposure.
“On average, the annual loss of retail revenue is 8% due to a lack of items on the shelves. For many years, retailers have only managed to solve this problem by increasing the number of employees, ”says Michael Unmüßig, CMO at SES-imagotag. “Together with Seal, we have now developed a solution tailored to the needs of the Brazilian market, which converts photos from cameras powered by batteries, on the shelves, into structured data. The state-of-the-art IoT concept combined with a highly scalable, cloud-based computer vision solution can quickly and specifically eliminate the causes of lost sales, ”he says.
“Captana is a cutting-edge technology that complements our portfolio very well, operating with our electronic label solution, which also improves the sales margin by optimizing price management. Now, the market finally has an affordable, functional and high-impact solution that solves the challenge of rupture once and for all ”, says Wagner Bernardes, CEO of Seal Sistemas. “It has never been easier to detect, immediately, the exhaustion or lack of products on the shelves, which is important to avoid customer frustration and important losses in billing”, he says.
Replacement alerts
Officially launched at the end of 2020 by SES-imagotag, Captana has been tested and perfected in pilot projects in some European countries, and is now mature and available to other countries, including Brazil. Its format has small dimensions, similar to those of a gondola tag, and allows it to operate in conjunction with the electronic VUSION ESLs tags, also present in the Seal Sistemas portfolio.
In addition, using geolocation features, the solution quickly performs a complete analysis of the quantity and position of the products on the gondola. In the event of an abnormality, the technology issues alerts in real time and directs automatic replacement orders through pre-defined configurations, optimizing the availability of the items. The technology can operate in an integrated manner with POS management software, such as Seal Systems' Kairos Store.
Captana also gives employees, partners and suppliers access to reports, tips and dashboards that detail episodes such as out of stock or a slowdown in the establishment's sales. This information is available in the cloud and can be accessed remotely anytime and anywhere, from your computer or mobile device. This strategic data optimizes the store's operation and efficiency and encourages collaboration between brands and retailers, in order to avoid product unavailability.
Launch Live
The official launch of Captana in Brazil will be held in a live hosted by Seal Sistemas on April 15th (Thursday), at 9am. In addition to CEO Wagner Bernardes, the conversation will also include the participation of Michael Unmüßig and Marcel Geppert, senior technical sales manager at SES-imagotag. Registration is free and can be done by this link.
The event will be the first in a trilogy centered on the theme “The new physical store, connected: new times demand new solutions”. Always starting at 9 am, the other two lives will be held on the 29th, talking about “New consumer activations and promotions: eliminating friction and empowering the consumer”; and on May 13, with the theme “Making the physical store more efficient to serve digital operations”.
