Study was conducted with 286 C-level executives in America

Most companies are migrating their business applications to cloud-based infrastructures (Cloud Computing), in search of advantages such as agility, innovation and exponential growth. This is what a recent study carried out by SAS Brasil with 286 C-level executives from the areas of technology and data analysis from large companies in Latin America, including 180 Brazilians from companies in the areas of retail, telecom, public sector, utilities, industries, financial services and consumer goods.

The perception is that 80% customers have or will have a Cloud Computing-based project in the next 12 months. "The cloud is definitely becoming familiar territory", highlights the marketing director of SAS Latin America, Kleber Wedemann, who led the survey, carried out between February and March 2019.

The study reveals that cloud technology is already a reality within companies when it comes to the application of Analytics: 39,47% of executives report that a migration to the cloud is planned for the next 6 or 12 months; 27,19% say they already have cloud data analytics use cases; and 11,40% reported that they have analytics applications on the platform, but face issues with data synchronization.

Lack of experience

At the same time that the research reveals a trend of migration to cloud applications, it also highlights the lack of experience of organizations in dealing with infrastructure based on this technology. 47,37% of companies recognize they don't have the skills needed to migrate and manage a cloud-based operation, but are considering doing so in-house. Already 27,19% are looking for an external vendor that can support them with these skills, and 25,44% of respondents indicated that they already have a Cloud-trained DevOps (Development and Operations) team.

For Wedemann, without access to a solid body of relevant knowledge, the organization's ability to take full advantage of the benefits offered by the cloud will be limited. "Migration to the cloud is a complex operation, you need to hire and retain the right resources. Because of this, a large number of these companies are looking to do the migrations with a specialized service provider."

migration strategy

Another relevant data from the survey shows that 37,72% of companies, within their cloud migration strategy, consider the adoption of low-code container technology, which allows isolated processes to run on the same operating system.

The ideal, according to Wedemann, is the adoption of a combined strategy to support the clients' migration strategy. "This combination of containers with Analytics is transformational for our clients' strategy. It is the type of migration that requires little recoding and that results in a great cost-benefit advantage of storage, thanks to the technology that the container enables", points out the director. .

The other available technologies are reprogramming, in which applications are recreated or rewritten to run in a different environment, mentioned by 32,46% of the survey executives; and rehosting, in which the application is moved to a public cloud, a cheaper and simpler option, preferred by 29,82% of the respondents. Each technology has different costs, applications and benefits.

Information security is the biggest concern

The number one concern for IT decision makers and data analysts when migrating applications to the cloud is information security (66.67%), followed by data synchronization (57.02%) and Service Level Agreement – ANS (22,81%).

Information security is precisely one of the main benefits that cloud storage can provide for companies, as well as cost reduction, environment flexibility and reduction of the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). "In addition to all the associated benefits that a cloud application provides, such as access distribution, mobility and the direct contribution to the company's digital transformation", concludes Wedemann.
