Automation is essential for Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) to deliver greater value, efficiency and agility

Gartner Inc. predicts that by 2026, 30% of enterprises will automate more than half of their network activities, which is a significant increase from less than 10% recorded in mid-2023.

“The leaders of Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) are increasingly looking to Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based analytics and augmented decision-making, including intelligent automation, to improve operational resilience and responsiveness, address complexity, and process increasing amounts of data through automation,” says Chris Saunderson, Senior Director and Analyst at Gartner.

Intelligent automation for Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) is the application of AI techniques, including Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to automate decision-making and execute actions across Infrastructure and Operations initiatives. It is increasingly being used to enable business agility and drive the enablement of more advanced Infrastructure and Operations services.

Intelligent automation is an emerging technology that finds itself in the “Trough of Disillusionment” of the Gartner's 2024 Hype Cycle for I&O Automation, and is expected to achieve widespread adoption in the next five to ten years.

The addition of capabilities of GenAI has increased market demand for intelligent platforms for . Through the use of analytics and automation, AI enables capabilities that improve operations, efficiency, and insight generation.

“Technology vendors that offer best-in-class tools for AI-based IT operations (AIOps), application performance monitoring, and GenAI will influence intelligent automation,” says Saunderson. “Developers of AI-based IT operations tools will Artificial intelligence (AIOps) and independent automation technologies can expand their offerings to include intelligent automation, through acquisitions or organic development.”

Hyperautomation remains an essential discipline for large enterprises:

“Along with AI, hyperautomation has experienced a resurgence of interest and demand since the GenAI craze began in November 2022,” says Frances Karamouzis, vice president and analyst at Gartner. “Hyperautomation involves the use of multiple technologies and tools, including AI, machine learning, event-driven software architecture, and robotic process automation, among others.” Less than 20% of companies are proficient in measuring hyperautomation initiatives. “Hyperautomation initiatives are often part of a larger technology roadmap that includes systems of record on one end of the spectrum and AI and GenAI on the other,” says Karamouzis. According to Gartner, the demand for hyperautomation is driven by the mandate for operational excellence in processes and functions to support resilience. This requirement continues to fuel the growth of hyperautomation-enabled offerings.
