An ABES member, the startup TUXTU focuses on the development of technological solutions that operate on two fronts: allowing public bodies and companies to have a unified environmental licensing system available through the Brazilian System of Environmental Licensing (SIBLAM); and encourage urban tree planting and the relationship between public management and civil society through the Urban Tree Planting Management System (SIGAU).

Marcelo Creão, CEO of TUXTU

According to Marcelo Creão, agricultural engineer, creator and CEO of TUXTU, the startup's main purpose is the conservation and preservation of the environment, an ideal shared by its team members. “Through our solutions, we want to direct actions that result in the conversation of the environment, collaborating for the quality of life of society”, highlighted the executive. That is, a purpose in tune with public and private sustainability policies and the ESG agenda.

To talk more about these solutions and the current stage of the business, the ABES Portal interviewed Marcelo Creão and shares this chat with you:

How did the idea of creating the startup TUXTU come about and its purpose?

TUXTU has a solution that was born from the environmental journey to remedy recurrent pains regarding environmental licensing. In Brazil, we identified the absence of standardization in the licensing process, with legislative dissonances, among other issues. TUXTU presents technological solutions to unify Brazil in a licensing system, through a platform that brings together the actors involved, provides legislation and technical aspects to harmonize the environmental licensing ecosystem. Our main purpose – that of the company and the members of the team – is the conservation and preservation of the environment.

How did the idea of creating TUXTU come about?

TUXTU was idealized by me and I sought other leaders for the team who aligned with our scope and purpose. Over the past three years, people have already passed through our startup who have improved the solution. The profiles of these leaders are technical, in order to guarantee security and credibility to collaborate with environmental and technological innovation, in addition to implementing efforts to achieve our purpose. We also want to help, in a technical way, citizens of civil society who have the availability to engage in the environmental cause.

Can you explain the differentials of SIBLAM?

The Brazilian System of Environmental Licensing (SIBLAM) proposes linear work in order to allow the engagement of all the actors involved (entrepreneurs, consultants, technicians, environmental agencies) in the solution. It is a tool that, in addition to the technical part, proposes to show the actors involved the indicators on how to collaborate from their areas of activity to alleviate difficulties in society. Since the environment happens as an integrated activity with repercussions in different sectors, the use of the different tools activated in SIBLAM can happen individually or interconnected.

Can you explain what makes SIGAU different?

The Urban Afforestation Management System (SIGAU) enables citizens to participate in the management of urban afforestation in their city. It is a system that allows the integration of public power with civil society, accompanying daily life and measuring the active participation of citizens. After verifying the shading of a given region, for example, SIGAU invites citizens to regularly participate and contribute to the platform.

What are the application cases of the systems they developed?
SIBLAM is a platform that needs to be adopted by the government and used as a tool for entrepreneurs who, at the end of their journey, obtain their environmental license. SIGAU, on the other hand, can be adopted by public authorities and by other organizations such as urban developers, water and energy companies and the like, permeating and conducting technical work on the management of urban forestry.

What is TUXTU's current business stage? Have you received any investment support?

The startup has received its own investment from the partners, which is invested in the development of solutions and allows putting the business model into practice. With the solutions already validated in the market and definitions of purposes, TUXTU has already gone through the ideation, validation, operation stage and, now, we are in the traction stage, in order to gain scale and seek new market ecosystems.

How has Tucuju Valley supported Tuxtu's growth?

Tucuju Valley is a natural accelerator. In all events, meetings or meetups held by Tucuju, we gained a significant advance, as we access quality content that accelerates the timing of learning, based on access to the experiences of those who have already gone through certain journeys. Thus, this is an innovation ecosystem that guarantees a process of permanent maturation and acceleration of people and businesses.

What are the startup's next steps and prospects for 2023?

The year 2023 presents us with a favorable business environment, as we operate in a niche environmental market, which includes licensing, urban forestry, development services, which still need to be explored. Our action planning for this year and the use of different disclosure channels will help us to achieve our purpose and to do business with the monetization of the service. The paradigm shift happens constantly with the opening and expansion into new markets.
