The strategy aims to help consumers embrace the use of new technology safely, while reducing their risks

Concerned about the growth in the adoption of AI PCs – computers with generative artificial intelligence systems –, the Trend Micro, a global cybersecurity leader, aims to provide, throughout 2024, solutions designed to protect consumers from abuses that may arise from new technology.

The arrival of AI PCs represents a shift in how consumers will use artificial intelligence applications, thanks to the Neural Processing Units (NPUs) that power them. AI PCs promise more speed and privacy than accessing or sending data for processing in the cloud. This additional computing power enables Trend Micro to deliver some of its AI tools in the cloud on the device itself, introducing features that leverage the efficiency and data privacy benefits that AI PCs offer to increase environmental protection.

“Although AI is a very attractive novelty, it also represents an opportunity for cybercriminals to apply more effective scams using Generative AI tools, whether for stealing confidential data or blocking filters. Trend Micro's Predictions for 2024 report already predicted a tsunami of attacks with tactics based on AI tools and that's why we are preparing to deal with this new scenario”, highlights Cesar Candido, general director of Trend Micro Brazil.

The AI PC allows consumers to use AI applications locally on their devices, achieving greater speed and privacy than when accessing or sending data for processing in the cloud. Consultancy IDC predicts that AI PCs will represent almost 60% of all PCs in the world by 2027, jumping from 50 million units in 2024 to more than 167 million in three years.

With the prospect of growth in the adoption of generative AI applications and the expansion of the AI PC market, Trend Micro plans a series of initiatives for the second half of the year, including:

  • Protection for AI applications: features to protect against tampering of AI applications or contamination of the AI application with malicious input, and prevent AI applications from inadvertently or maliciously accessing sensitive data;
  • Protection against malicious AI content: Solutions that protect consumers from malicious content generated or altered by AI;
  • NPU-Powered Cybersecurity Features: Solutions designed to secure AI PCs that harness additional computing power.
