Through open tools and standards, the company joins founding members ABB, Capgemini, Microsoft and Siemens to expand the use of the industrial edge

Red Hat, a leading global provider of open source solutions, has joined The Linux Foundation’s Margo Initiative as a steering committee member to advance interoperability in industrial automation environments. With the support of some of the world’s largest automation ecosystem providers, Margo defines the mechanisms for interoperability between edge applications, devices, workloads, and orchestration software, and plans to deliver interoperability through an open standard, reference implementation, and comprehensive conformance testing toolkit.

Red Hat joins founding members ABB, Capgemini, Microsoft, Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric and Siemens, along with other like-minded organizations that are innovating in the industrial automation software space. Kelly Switt, senior director of global business development for intelligent edge, will represent Red Hat on the steering committee to collaborate on developing a comprehensive and effective interoperability standard designed to help customers achieve their innovation goals with greater speed and efficiency.

“As the industrial automation space rapidly accelerates its modernization, there is an urgent need to enhance edge interoperability across the ecosystem. The Margo Initiative aligns with Red Hat’s commitment to unlocking barriers to innovation and simplifying the deployment, scalability, and operation of industrial solutions for our customers,” she said.

The Margo initiative’s open standard aims to bring much-needed flexibility, simplicity and scalability to the industrial automation space, removing barriers to modernization in complex, multi-vendor environments and accelerating digital transformation for organizations of all sizes. The reference implementation and associated conformance testing toolkit will be designed to provide more uniform adoption and build confidence in Margo’s promise of interoperability.

Red Hat is committed to transforming the way systems and providers interoperate within the industrial automation ecosystem through open innovation and community collaboration. Collaborating on projects such as The Margo Initiative and the Open Process Automation Forum Red Hat’s commitment to addressing industrial edge pain points is an important step in helping Red Hat customers and partners realize the full potential of technologies like AI, machine learning, and advanced data analytics at the edge.
