AIoT and Smart Edge gain strength as tools for innovation and efficiency in the IT and Telecommunications sector in Brazil

Brazilian companies are already discussing the next phase of IoT, called AIoT, which is essential for hyperautomation, aiming at greater efficiency and innovation. The founder of the Tudo Sobre IoT group, Thelma Troise, moderated the panel “Hyper Automation in Complex Environments: AIoT and Smart Edge expanding innovation and operational efficiency”, which welcomed executives from the IT and Telecommunications sector to show cases of the application of this technology in Brazil today.

Diuliana França, Embratel’s Cloud Solutions Director, highlighted that AI is already integrated into the company’s processes and that the focus now is to inform about Smart Edge, where processing occurs directly on devices. Pietro Colloca, from Intel, mentioned a project with a brewery, which used 3D cameras and AI to optimize product counting. Pietro Colloca, Intel’s Applications Specialist for Latin America, highlighted a project with a brewery, which used 3D cameras and AI to optimize product counting.

LGPD is not enough to prevent abuses involving generative AI in Brazilian industry, experts say

In the panel “Regulation of AI and interactions between people and machines” at Futurecom 2024, Rony Vainzof, coordinator of defense and cybersecurity at the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), discussed the progress of AI laws in Brazil. Miriam Winner, from the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD), explained that the 2018 General Data Protection Law (LGPD) does not cover all the risks of generative AI, as it only regulates personal data, leaving out non-personal data, such as that of legal entities. Miriam highlighted that the bill under discussion provides for AI governance aligned with the LGPD.

Also participating in the panel were the general coordinator of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Guilherme Corrêa; the coordinator of Digital Transformation of the Ministry, Cristina Shimoda; and the advisor to the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), Victor Oliveira Fernandes.

GenAI: The New Frontier of Social Engineering and Digital Fraud

With the continuous advancement of technology, the convergence between generative artificial intelligence and social engineering has generated a new series of cyber risks. The Future Cyber panel presented some data: In Brazil, cyber attacks are responsible for R$190 billion in losses per year and 621% of CISOs are concerned about employee security breaches.

Mediator Josean Siqueira Santos, CISO and DPO at Sapore, defended the moderate use of generative AI in companies, highlighting the risks of attacks. André Frutuoso, business information security officer at Raízen, reinforced the importance of aligning cybersecurity with the business, considered that cybersecurity professionals should increasingly have their focus linked to the business and mentioned experiences with employees who were early adopters of Gen AI.

Alexandre Nery, data science executive at Serasa Experian, warned about the potential use of deep fakes in social engineering and financial fraud. Guilherme Aquino, professor at Inatel, warned about the use of Gen AI for hacker attacks by new players. Previously, attacks came from specialized hackers, but new technologies allow the general population to also have access to attack tools.

Ricardo Brito, director of professional services for Latin America at Nexis Risk Solutions, commented on the use of AI to combat AI. With the advancement of technology, it is a race between security experts and attackers, “most of the time, we win,” he concluded.

From Prediction to Prevention: How Technology Can Transform Climate Disaster Management

The lecture highlighted the growing concern about natural disasters intensified by climate change and the need for adaptation. Carlos Afonso Nobre, a professor at USP, warned about the danger of heat waves, which cause more than 1 million deaths annually, and advocated investment in green infrastructure, such as urban forests to reduce pollution and control temperatures. The speakers highlighted the role of technology and artificial intelligence in predicting and mitigating disasters. Another point addressed was the importance of intelligent models to monitor data in real time, and public awareness, citing Japan as a successful example.

The challenge of expanding connectivity in rural areas, where the government, in partnership with Civil Defense, is developing an alert application and the need for partnerships between the public and private sectors to face disasters, were also highlighted topics in the lecture.
