In the first quarter of 2022, almost 2 million computers were sold; while corporate sales continued to advance, the movement in retail was downward, as a result of the country's economic moment and the reduction in demand after a positive year

The PC market continues with a slight increase in Brazil. In the first three months of 2022, around 1.98 million computers were sold, a growth of 6% compared to the same period in 2021. Of this total, 450 thousand were desktops, an increase of 15%, and approximately 1.5 million were notebooks, 3% more than Q1 last year. The data is from IDC Brazil PCs Tracker 1Q2022study of IDC Brasil, leader in market intelligence, consulting services and conferences with the Information Technology and Telecommunications industries.

According to the study, the increase was driven by the corporate market, which reached its highest level of participation in recent years, representing almost 49% of total computer sales and growing 36% more than in January, February and March 2021. For Daniel Voltarelli , IDC market analyst at IDC Brasil, “the rise owes to the constant demand for computers for educational purposes, the need for companies to update their IT assets and adapt their workforces to the hybrid conditions that are gaining more and more space in organizations”.

Retail, which reached a volume close to 1 million units, fell by 121TP3Q, year on year. Regarding the slowdown in retail sales, the analyst at IDC Brasil sees the impacts of the country's economic moment, with high inflation and interest rates, and the consequent decrease in consumers' purchasing power. “There is also a natural reduction in retail demand, after a 2021 recording such significant advances in the segment”, he says.

As for prices, in the first quarter of 2022, the average cost of a desktop was around R$ 3.5 thousand and of a notebook at R$ 4.7 thousand, respectively 8% and 23% more than in the first quarter of 2021.

The total revenue of the computer market in the first quarter of 2022 grew by 27% and was R$ 8.9 billion.

Projections

For the remainder of the year, IDC projects a slight retraction in the PC market, but this perspective is not homogeneous for all segments. In retail, the expectation is for shrinkage, following what has already been observed in the first quarter of this year. However, for corporate (B2B), current projections are for a significant expansion throughout the year. “The country certainly has challenges in the economy and politics that will extend into the coming quarters, but we are also in a moment of understanding of the new conditions of hybrid work and digital transformation in a post-pandemic context, which can benefit the PC segment”, reinforces Voltarelli.
