ABES was present at the recent ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) public meeting, held in Istanbul, Turkey, from November 9 to 14, 2024. With the presence of approximately 2,000 representatives from 144 countries, the event focused on governance and the future of the Internet, highlighting the collaborative potential for global technological advances. Represented by Paulo Milliet Roque, president, and Vanda Scartezini, director, ABES participated in discussions aimed at ensuring a safe and inclusive Internet. One of the new developments announced during the 81st ICANN meeting is that, starting in 2026, companies will be able to register new top-level domains (gTLDs), such as “yourcompany”. This innovation promises to strengthen brands and improve digital security in the current scenario.
Additionally, ABES is in the process of establishing an agreement with ICANN that aims to support its members in combating DNS abuse, a global challenge that includes malicious practices such as phishing and malware dissemination. This agreement is a testament to ABES’ commitment to promoting a safe and trustworthy digital environment.
A special highlight of the event was Vanda Scartezini’s role as coordinator of DNS Women, an initiative dedicated to increasing female participation at ICANN. During the meeting in Istanbul, the DNS Women session explored the multistakeholder model, offering an analysis from the perspective of women in the Asia-Pacific region, reiterating the importance of including diverse voices in discussions about the future of the Internet.
“ABES’ active participation not only reaffirms its relevance on the international stage, but also demonstrates its continued commitment to fostering governance, security and innovation in the IT sector”, concludes Paulo Milliet Roque.
