By mapping digital risk, the cybersecurity giant points out system weaknesses and highlights the need for multi-layered protection

Brazilian government systems are a prime target for cybercrime, which promotes attacks to compromise the availability of services and to obtain data for future sale on the deep web. In the first half of 2024 alone, the Federal Government's Cyber Incident Prevention, Treatment and Response Center (CTIR-Gov) recorded more than 4,700 incidents, more than double the number recorded in the same period the previous year.

The Government segment is also among the most targeted by digital criminals in surveys released by Trend Micro, a global leader in cybersecurity. Analyzing the same period of the CTIR-Gov survey, it is noted that the public sector occupied third place in the ranking of attacks ransomware, a type of extortion carried out through the kidnapping of digital data.

Accustomed to working with government agencies, Trend Micro Brazil Sales Engineer Patrick Lopes says that the increase in targeted attacks has been causing a change in the segment's stance, which until now had been using several tools without worrying about optimization on a daily basis. "Many agencies have started to understand that the concept of digital protection is a concept based on layers and that the antivirus from 10 years ago represents only 10% of one of the layers of this great cybersecurity architecture in 'multilayer'”, he emphasizes.

Patrick says that Trend has expanded its presence in state-owned technology companies, in the executive, judicial and banking sectors, thanks to operational agreements. “Mapping cyber risk has made it possible to show companies their security gaps and weaknesses. With this consultancy and support, they can create a more assertive project, with a technical basis to protect applications and guarantee services to citizens,” explains the executive.

Another important point is visibility. Adopting a platform solution broadens the overall view of the attack surface, automates threat detection and response, and reduces operational complexity, in addition to enabling the integration of multiple layers of security. “Criminals will continue to create new ways to exploit vulnerable areas, increasing risk as companies use new technologies and increasingly offer digital services. Therefore, it is essential that IT teams have end-to-end visibility,” concludes the Sales Engineer at Trend Micro.
