TIVIT has listed important precautions for consumers to enjoy e-commerce without worry

Brazilian e-commerce is expected to generate more than R$234.9 million in revenue in 2025, according to ABComm, representing an increase of R$151.3 million compared to last year. The growth in sales in the digital environment is also attracting the attention of cybercriminals, who are perfecting their practices against retailers and consumers in order to steal and hijack data, take down online stores or defraud promotions in fake emails, messages and websites.

A report published by Check Point Software this week indicates that 2024 broke records in the number of ransomware attacks, one of the malicious software preferred by criminals to carry out virtual scams. According to the survey, more than 5,400 attacks were carried out throughout the year, an increase of 11% compared to 2023. The last quarter also had impressive numbers, accounting for 33% of the records for the entire year, with 1,827 incidents.

Given the current scenario and the high possibility of scams, specialist Eduardo Gonçales, CISO of TIVIT, a Brazilian multinational that connects technology for a better world, lists some precautions for consumers to enjoy online shopping without headaches:

Look for real deals and trusted stores – Be very careful with unrealistic promotions from dubious websites and emails that promise prices that are much lower than those practiced on the market. Check whether the website has all the certificates and the security padlock, displayed in the browser bar, as well as supplier seals in the page footer. It is mandatory that the company provides registration information, such as CNPJ, corporate name and headquarters address. Also search on websites such as Posso Confiar, Reclame Aqui and Procon to find out if the store is trustworthy.

Pay attention to the links – Do not click on links sent via email or messaging apps before checking the store's reliability. Some criminals make subtle changes to the address (URL) that may go unnoticed by victims. If in doubt, type the store's address into your browser and search for the product directly.

Use virtual credit cards – Credit cards, especially virtual ones, are the fastest and safest way to confirm a purchase, offering the possibility of a refund in the event of fraud or non-receipt of the product due to lack of stock. PIX quickly became popular with consumers, but it has been used for many scams. Therefore, it is important to be very careful, especially because of the difficulty in getting your money back in the event of fraud. Payments by boleto present an even greater risk because there are viruses that alter the document's barcode, diverting the payment to the criminals' account.

Keep your system constantly updated – Some security flaws are fixed by manufacturers themselves with new versions of operating systems. Therefore, before you go shopping, keep your computer and mobile device systems up to date, as well as security tools such as antivirus and firewalls, to avoid infection by possible malware while browsing.

Know your rights: For all online purchases, you have the right to regret and return the product within seven calendar days.
