Transformative technologies to be highlighted at Gartner CIO & IT Executive 2024 conference

The 25 disruptive technologies present in Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies 2024 of Gartner Inc. are distributed in four main areas: Artificial intelligence (AI) Autonomous, developer productivity, total experience and development programs safety and human-centric privacy. Trends like these and others shaping the future of IT and business, including accelerating enterprise transformation, application modernization, infrastructure, and operations, will be highlighted in the upcoming Gartner CIO & IT Executive Conference 2024, which will take place from September 23 to 25 in Sao Paulo, at the Sheraton São Paulo WTC Hotel (SP).

"THE Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has surpassed peak expectations as business focus continues to shift from the excitement around base models to use cases that drive Return on Investment (ROI),” says Arun Chandrasekaran, Vice President and Analyst at Gartner, highlighting that this is accelerating Autonomous Artificial Intelligence. According to him, although the current generation of AI models does not yet have autonomy, AI research labs are rapidly launching agents that can dynamically interact with the environment to achieve goals, although this development is a gradual process.

“Even as AI continues to gain attention, CIOs (Chief Information Officers) and other IT executives should also look at other emerging technologies that have transformative potential for developers, security, and the customer and employee experience, and strategize how to exploit these systems in line with their companies’ ability to deal with unproven technologies,” says Chandrasekaran.

The Gartner Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies is unique among Gartner's Hype Cycles in that it focuses on the main insights of more than 2,000 technologies and frameworks applied technologies that Gartner analyzes annually into a succinct set of emerging “must-know” technologies. These technologies have the potential to deliver transformative benefits over the next two to ten years.

According to Gartner, the four main areas of emerging technology trends are:

Autonomous Artificial Intelligence: The rapid evolution of AI is producing autonomous AI systems that can operate with minimal human supervision, with the ability to self-improve and make effective decisions in complex environments. These advanced AI systems, which can perform any task a human can perform, are slowly beginning to move from science fiction to reality. These technologies include multi-agent systems, large action models, machine customers, humanoid working robots, autonomous agents and reinforcement learning.

Boost developer productivity: The productivity of developers goes beyond writing code quickly. It is influenced by effective communication and collaboration among developers, as well as the feeling of energized focus, total engagement, and enjoyment (being in the “flow state”).

“Technology is revolutionizing the way developers design and deliver software, making them more productive than ever before,” says Chandrasekaran. “It is ensuring they can deliver high-quality products quickly while maximizing gains by improving developer satisfaction, collaboration and workflow.” According to the Gartner analyst, emerging technologies that are boosting developer productivity include Software Engineering augmented by AI, cloud-native, GitOps, internal developer portals, prompt engineering, and WebAssembly.

Empower with full experience: Total Experience is a strategy that creates superior shared experiences by interweaving customer, employee, and user experience and multi-experience practices. It uses technology to address critical interactions, empowering both customers and employees to drive greater trust, satisfaction, loyalty, and advocacy. Technologies to be evaluated include the customer digital twin, spatial computing, super apps, and 6G.

Deliver human-centric security and privacy: Companies will become more resilient by using techniques of safety and privacy that create a culture of mutual trust and awareness of shared risks across teams.

“Security practices are often based on the assumption that humans can behave in a completely safe and secure manner. But when employees have to choose between security and business delivery, they often choose business delivery, often bypassing the most stringent security controls,” said the Gartner analyst. “Human-centric security and privacy weave a robust security and privacy fabric into the digital design of the enterprise.”

Emerging technologies that support human-centric security and privacy include AI TRiSM, cybersecurity mesh architecture, digital immune system, disinformation security, machine learning, and homomorphic encryption. Gartner clients can read more at “Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, 2024”.
